The Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi Climate Change Strategy is an initiative aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change on the Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi community and their environment. This strategy promotes sustainability, resilience, and adaptation while honoring the cultural values and deep connection the community has with the land.
To support this initiative, JIX designed a visually rich interactive installation at the Ngaa Rauru Innovation Hub. This installation engages the community in understanding the challenges posed by climate change and the strategic responses outlined in the Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi Climate Change Strategy. Serving as a dynamic platform, it allows visitors to explore various aspects of climate change impacts and the innovative solutions proposed by the community.
Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi, a Māori iwi with deep ancestral ties to the land and waterways, faces growing challenges due to the impacts of climate change. Rising sea levels, unpredictable weather patterns, and environmental degradation threaten not only the physical landscape but also the cultural heritage and traditional practices of the iwi. As kaitiaki (guardians) of their environment, Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi is committed to finding sustainable solutions that protect their whenua (land) and resources while maintaining their cultural values and connection to the natural world.
Life Rituals embody the essence of Whakatupuria te Kawa Ora, weaving together the sacred teachings of creation and our cultural values as we navigate the challenges of climate change. I feel the profound connection to Tangaroa, the ocean, and Taane, the land, recognizing their vital roles in sustaining life. As I participate in these rituals, I am reminded of our interdependence; the wellbeing of our environment reflects our own health.
The Kawa instills in me a deep respect for the balance necessary for all forms of life to thrive. I honor our ancient wisdom, embracing the idea that our collective strength lies in unity—Kia ngaatahi te hoe—as we paddle together toward a sustainable future.
The Impact Wheel design features a central Ngaa Rauru spiral, symbolizing unity and interconnectedness. Each sector, represented by intuitive icons, addresses key issues like Biodiversity, Water, and Energy, with a clean, modern aesthetic.
The vibrant greens and soft whites create an inviting atmosphere, enhancing user engagement. Interactivity allows visitors to easily explore each section, revealing deeper information and fostering a connection with the Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi climate action strategy in an immersive and visually appealing way.
